One of the biggest takeaways for the Suns was his ability to play both sides of the ball, with the three steals and three blocks! Which lead to transition baskets. Jock also made the right passes and never looked to force the action, just letting the game come to him.

He also put the clamps on Domantas Sabonis on multiple occasions, keeping him to 9 points and 10 rebounds. You could see his enthusiasm for the defensive end, getting fired up after making a defensive stop when Sabonis tried to go one on with him inside the pain.

Check out his Highlights below:

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4302997934515328021.post-7521363569358294212022-10-13T06:11:00.008-07:002022-10-14T05:43:50.282-07:00Adelaide 36ers vs Tasmania Jackjumpers

Adelaide 36ers vs Tasmania Jackjumpers

When I saw Daniel Johnson starting back from Injury I was worried for my Tassie pick.
But I was still pretty confident, Rashad Kelly and Milton Doyle are two of the best imports in the league. I hate the disrespect the media gives the JackJumpers. They have probably the best coach in the competition now that Rob Beveridge and Brian Goorjian have left, and he picks strong teams with less money. Kelly and Doyle look to be two of the best value picks in the league.

1st quarter

Josh Magette drops a 3 to get he Jackjumpers (JJ's) going.

And then a Milton Doyle 3, then a steal and another 3 by Magette and its a Time out from Adelaide. Dream start for the JJs 0-9 8:42.

Adelaide get things going as Craig Randall forces it inside for a nice floater and rights the ship for the first Adelaide bucket.

Doyle has a big block on Cleveland and it looks like Tassie didn’t like being such heavy underdogs.
Milton Doyle just keeps hitting shots and Tassie are rolling 4-18. 5:22 1st Quarter.

Kelly gets in on the action as he just forces his way to the rim, and goes through Franks 6-20

Josh Magette puts up one of his long bombs and he finally gets one to go but the turns around and drops another on!!! With a Step back near the half way line 6-27 2:45!

Randall has a nice soft floater inside to finally keep the offence going for Adelaide! Tassie still played very good D as he gets to go having to take it one one against the defender.

But Milton Doyle pulls out a 360 spin on the spot and hits the J To close the quarter 10-32!

Josh Magette had 14 points 4/5 from 3 in the first Quarter!
8 offensive rebounds from the JJ's

2nd Quarter

Antonius Cleveland gets scoring started for Adelaide and hopefully its a better start this quarter for the 36er.
And Tassie starts cold, as they can’t hit multiple wide open 3s to start!

The 36ers play some much better Defence to open the quarter and Randall starts dropping shots as he drops a bomb 19-34 7:40.

Sunday Dech is also great addition. He is such an underrated player, he hits shots and plays great D.
Adelaide are rolling as they launch their comback 23-34. Tassie struggling to get it up the floor let alone near the basketball. 36ers start playing lock down D.

Fabian Krslovic pushes it o the rim to steady the ship again for the JJ’s and Get the And one.

But Josh Magette is still on fire to hold a firm lead 25-50 at the midway point of the quarter.

Robert Franks has a strong play inside as he just dominates Jack McVeigh and lays it in then, drops the ball on McVeigh on the ground! Statement play by Franks 27-40. The refs give a Tech to Franks and one shot for McVeigh. Soft. Let them play.

Isaac White contributes some good minutes for the JJs to keep their offence going with 5 quick points.

Anthony Drmic and Mitch Mccarron get a block each the Mccarron pushes it in transition and throws the no look pass to Drmic! Great play to close the half 37-51.

3rd quarter

Josh Magette gets a steal and fast break layup to open scoring for the JJs.

And then a Doyle drive extends the lead 37-56 with another good start to the half for the JJ's.
Franks open scoring for 36ers with a jam in an open lane 7:30

Then a Antonius Cleveland steal and monster jam in transition may just lift the 36ers. 41-57

36ers getting o boards and were staying in it 44-58 with 4:15 in the quarter.

The game started getting heated between Mccarron and Magette. A foul on Magette and its a coaches challenge. I love it. bu its unsunccessfull as Maggette did the initial foul and Mccarron gets away with the retaliation push. Good officiating! You ll never hear me say that again.

Adelaide are a fast break quick offence team. Jack jumpers have the opposite idntity as a team. They slow it down, move it through hands and find shots. Then they slow them down on D!

Tassie miss two free throws: Code word is FEED. Go get the free cheeseburgers South Australia. And they’re still down 14, 44-58 with 4 min left in the quarter.

Craig Randall dropped a bomb from way out and the lead was down to 11 for the JJ's.
But a Kelly mid range jumper closes the quarter and Adelaide are right back in it, down 13 headed into the final quarter.

4th Quarter:

Turnover from both teams to open the quarter, both teams upped the defence again.

Jack white opened scoring with a pair of free throws and then a 3 ball for the JJ's.
And for the 36ers Drmc drives to the basket for the and 1 one play. 56-71
O board and Adelaide hanging around. 60-71 8:00 and Mccarron had a no look behind the head pass to franks under the basket for easy layup, Time out JJ’s!

Jarred Weeks drops a Jumper and 36ers can’t get within 10! as the lead is back out to 13. and it really breaks the run for the 36ers.

And then the JackJumpers get a couple of steals and the lead is back out to 20.! Tassie were not gonna fold. 60-80 6:20.

Weeks Drops back to back 3s! 65-88 He was killing it 4;45 left in the game That’s the final knock out punch. It was game over from here.

In one worrying note Milton Doyle takes a seat with 3:30 and a bit of a limp! Game 2 in the round he might be a bit sore.

The game was over but both teams closed it out with a couple of nice highlights. Kelly had a Monster Jam with the and one in transition.
And in the last play of the game Kai Sotto found good post position and had a nice over the head lay in as the game closed out 72-97.

Game over the JackJumpers walking away with the W 72-97.

Gotta say I called it in this one. I hope some people cleaned up on those odds. Great play by The Jackjumpers, they threw the big punch in the 1st quarter and took some good fight back, but were too good in the end.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4302997934515328021.post-5626240393617209482022-10-12T21:51:00.004-07:002022-10-12T21:51:39.382-07:00NBL23 Round 3 Tips

NBL23 round 3
<table class="MRH-njmSb5ZTkfb1o4dqv" style="border-collapse: collapse; Let's hope I can keep a good run going. Early season is always the most difficult especially with all these rotation changes from injuries and players coming back/going down. It has been hard for teams to really find form and create an offensive and defensive game plan. Now with Adelaide coming back, it will great to see where they sit after that amazing shooting display in the states.

Game 1:

Adelaide 36er vs Tasmania JackJumpers

After the 36ers took down the Phoenix Suns in the NBA preseason, Adelaide should be an easy pick against the middling Tasmania Jackjumpers. However I'm going against the trend and tipping Tasmania to get the win here. The 36ers may still be without Daniel Johnson who was a key figure in the Suns win and was injured near half time, and if the JackJumpers can play lock down D on Craig Randall then I can see them walking away the winner. However if the 36ers play like they did against the Suns no one in this league can beat them. That shooting display will be tough to replicate, especially if they are without the inside presence of DJ. Watch out for Rashad Kelly to have a big game.

Tasmania by 6

Game 2:

Sydney Kings Vs Cairns Taipans

Sydney should roll through Cairns to continue their unbeaten start to the season. Cairns would have to be shooting the lights out to walk away with this win. However after the thrashing the Wildcats gave Cairns last week at home, I cant seem them getting the upset here.

Sydney by 18

Game 3:

Perth Wildcats vs Melbourne United

Melbourne united easily handled the Perth wildcats in the preseason Blitz but as we have seen, those games have counted for nothing with teams resting players and no one able to hit a shot during the Blitz.

From the current form of both teams you gotta go with Perth at home. I feel Melbourne could play well and still probably lose.

Perth by 6.

Game 4:

Adelaide 36ers Vs Illawarra Hawks

Adelaide at home against the Hawks will be another game where their form from Friday should really be the tell for this tip. The Hawks lost an import in Justin Simon going down with a torn meniscus and that is a big hole to fill. From an in the dark tip, Ill take Adelaide to win it, finding form after a game one upset from Tassie.

36ers by 5.

Game 5:

SE Melbourne Phoenix Vs New Zealand Breakers

The Phoenix should have some returning players this week, with Ryan Broekoff and Zhou Qi coming back into the lineup. Playing at home I think it will be closer then the bookies are predicting, with a couple of unpracticed players in the starting lineup for Phoenix. I would not be surprised for the Breakers to pull off the upset but Ill stick with the Home team.

Phoenix to win by 3

Game 6:

Melbourne united vs Tasmania Jack Jumpers

Melbourne will need to put up a big game at home after a rocky start to the season. Tasmania are solid team but playing In Melbroune with a hungry Melbourne team with some imports potentially playing for their year. Ive got Melbourne to take the home the W.

Melbourne by 8

Game 7:

Sydney Kings vs Brisbane Bullets

This is a must win for Brisbane who have had possibly the toughest start to the season going 0-3 taking on the Perth Wildcats, Sydney Kings and a tough overtime loss to the Tasmania Jackjumpers all in away games. Brisbane Coach James Duncan's job could be on the chopping block if this losing streak continues. but playing against the in form and number one team Sydney Kings it will certainly be a tough night for the hot and cold Bullets.

The smart money will still be on the Kings but ill pick the Bullets to take the home upset and get the win. They have had a long road trip and should be pumped to play at home. Tyler Johnson found form in Tassie and caddie kicked his game into gear against Perth. If Sobey can get hot and they look to use the post, Brisbane should find form.

Brisbane to win by 6

Game 8:

Illawarra Hawks Vs New Zealand Breakers

So early in the season these middling teams are the hardest to pick. I think with the Hawks losing Justin Simon and the Breakers losing Tom Abercrombie both have injured players however I feel Simon is the bigger loss for the team. Also the breakers are used to playing away games after playing all last year in Australia. With two players as possible MVP candidates in Xavier Cooks and Derrick Walton Jnr. Just look at the that dunk! Both players displayed their ability to just take over for Sydney, and took turns on offence to shut out the Brisbane bullets in the fourth quarter and then just roll over Melbourne United. Xavier Cooks is playing the best I have seen through his career. He is attacking the basket and taking over games for large portions. Derrick Walton Jnr looks like he can do it all for Sydney, with stellar playmaking skills and getting open shots to all their players, to attacking the basket and dropping shots. He is looking like the best new player of the season. Then when you have DJ Vasiljvic open to bomb from outside and Justin Simon attacking the rim, the Sydney Kings will be tough to beat. If one player is having an off night, as with DJ being streaky to start the season, they have plenty of weapons to keep their offence ticking.

Cairns Taipans

Cairns as it looked in preseason would be a streaky hot shooting team. If they're hitting their shots they will get some good wins against good teams, but if their shots are off they are ugly to watch as seen when Perth rolled them. They will be a hard pick all season until we see how consistent they can be from deep. After shooting the lights out against Tasmania DJ Hogg went cold and could not hit a shot against Perth as the Wildcats absolutely rolled them. More shots do not always mean more buckets.

Melbourne United

A well rested united squad were steamrolled by the Sydney Kings this week with 4/5 starters only putting in single digit scoring each. Melbourne were looking the goods in preseason and maybe it was just a rough night but it has not made me confident about this Melbourne squad. They won they're first game in overtime against the breakers but until we see more games they are looking shaky. They're results this week will really show where they stand on the board playing Tasmania and Perth. Their imports more then any other I think will be on the chopping block with the salary Melbourne have at their disposal.

Brisbane Bullets

Brisbane have started the season 0-3 in the season and the team must be disappointed. They have at times looked like a playoff team and at others a cellar dweller. The Bullets have had a tough start playing good teams away from home, with their easiest game against the Tasmania Jackjumpers who themselves started 0-3 and were hungry for a win playing at home. They really look like they need to establish they're play style with what everyone thought would be heavy post play team is barely seen. Tyler Johnson has been hot and cold with pushing his play in the game. At times he will force his will and attack the basket and others not barely be seen on the court.

Brisbane did get Jason Cadee going against the Sydney Kings and he really balled out for awhile after 0 points in game 1. Brisbane really need Sobey and Cadee shooting well to play well as a team. They can not solely rely on Baynes and Johnson to carry them against these stacked rosters in Sydney, Perth etc. And they need to go inside more often. Find Baynes and Froling for more post touches and watch the offence develop as the double team comes and they find the open shooter. They played well like this in the preseason but its barely been seen so far in regular season. Why? I don't know, maybe its too easily predicted and with Fiba defence the help is to quick to find the open shooter. Will we see a coach change sooner then we see an import sent home this year?

Tasmania JackJumpers

Tasmania look like a solid team. After going to the finals last year they could not be expected to start at the top, but as last year, I think they will have a strong 2nd half of the season with the coach and play style they utilise. Which is heavy on the defensive end and this will become stronger as the season progresses and the team learns all of Scott Roths defensive rotations. As the team really starts to gel and the imports find their time to take over they should be a solid team that can stand toe to toe with any team out there. That said it might be a slower start to the season. I do like their imports and McVeigh can shoot from anywhere but if they are having an off night the Jackjumpers will certainly have some tough losses.

Melbourne Phoenix

Melbourne got its first win of the season off an amazing display from Kyle Adnam but I cant see him shooting that well every night. They then went on to drop their next two games against the New Zealand Breakers and Cairns Taipans. I was not confident with the Phoenix going into the season but mostly due to missing players from injury which have still not returned. Apparently that may change this week with the possibility of Ryan Broekhoff and ZouQi returning to the line up in the next game and Gary Brown possibly the week after. Im still not very high on them at least until Brown is back and we see how they play as a team with the new starters onto the team.

New Zealand Breakers

The Breakers are looking solid but like Tasmania may get better as the season progresses. They look to still be establishing their play style and with some young players they may need some time to find the their feet before putting up some big wins. William McDowell White will be a great floor general when he can find where his team-mates want the ball.

Adelaide 36ers

Adelaide did what no other NBL squad has been able to in history by taking down the Phoenix Suns! they put on an absolute shooting clinic to take an unprecedented win. However they did turn around and get absolutely rolled by the Oklahoma City Thunder. Was it just a hot shooting night or are Adelaide about to return and roll through to the top of the NBL. Im not sure but Craig Randall looks like he can put up big numbers on any night. They may not start as well as others are expecting until Daniel Johnson returns to the lineup, but when fully healthy I can see them going toe to toe with Sydney. This is CJ's team and they look good!

Perth Wildcats

The Wildcats are looking stronger and stronger with every game they play. Bryce Cotton is balling out night in and night out, but their role players are stepping up to contribute everywhere, and put them in the top 2 to start the season. Luke Travers is playing excellent D and is everywhere, while Todd Blantchfield was absolutely on fire in this 350th game of this career. Brady Manek and Teshawn Thomas are contributing both inside and from the perimeter. The Wildcats look to have a well rounded team that has been made for Bryce Cotton to continue to be the MVP calibre player he is. At this stage in the season its a two horse race with Sydney and Perth the standout teams. Thomas did go down with an ankle injury but missing him and Corey Webster did not hamper their ability to beat down the Cairns Taipans. They may have some difficulty to overcome losing them and I will be interested to hear when they are back. Against stronger defensive teams they may struggle until they both return to the lineup.

Illawarra Hawks

The Hawks have a had a tough start to the season matching up against some strong teams with their only win against the SE Melbourne Phoenix. The Hawks are looking a little shaky without Brian Goojian at the helm and after losing Justin Robinson with a torn meniscus the Hawks may have a tough run the next few games until they find a replacement. Tyler Harvey will have to be playing his best to keep them in the hunt this week.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4302997934515328021.post-69617752103852386172022-10-10T17:17:00.005-07:002022-10-10T17:17:44.651-07:00Pelicans Rookie Aussie, Dyson Daniels injured in preseason game
Dyson Daniels rolled ankle against San Antonio Spurs preseason

Dyson Daniels rolled his ankle early in the preseason match against the San Antonio Spurs. The New Orleans Pelicans went on to win the game but Daniels was forced to leave the game early after only 20 seconds of court time.

The team has "no updates right now" from Pelicans Coach willie Green after the game.

Daniels rolled the same ankle in his first summer league game in Las Vegas earlier in the year and was out for the rest of summer league. This new injury could put him out for the rest of Preseason and possible part of the start of the season.

In his first two preseason games Daniels was averaging, 10.5 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists and 1 block, and was having a strong presence on defence and as a playmaker off the bench.

Lets hope its a quick recovery and not an ongoing issue with the same ankle being injured. The Pelicans will face the Miami Heat on Wednesday as their preseason preparation continues.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4302997934515328021.post-28710664947346904512022-10-09T23:02:00.002-07:002022-10-10T00:15:09.311-07:00Dante Exum had a big game in the Euro league first round for Partizan Belgrade

Dante Exum on fire for Partizan Belgrade!

Dante Exum started his Partizan Belgrade tenure with a big first game! He finished with 22 points and 4 assists in a loss for Partizan but Exum came out firing dropping 11 in the first quarter. He is playing the point guard position for Partizan which I believe is the best spot for him, as he knows how to keep the ball moving and has the speed to attack the rim and make assists when he sees the opening. Now that he has a more consistent three ball he is looking great out there.

Exum had all his skills on display, splashing threes and attacking the rack putting Europe's biggest centre on a poster. Its quite unbelievable he isn't back on an NBA roster with his raw athleticism and high basketball IQ. I'm still a big fan and hopefully we can see him back in the NBA soon. Until then I'll try to post some highlights when i can.

Check out his highlights from game 1:

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4302997934515328021.post-37640226289449389162022-10-08T21:46:00.000-07:002022-10-08T21:46:04.218-07:00Brisbane Bullets vs Sydney Kings round 2 game review NBL23
Brisbane Bullets vs Sydney Kings round 2 game review NBL23

I picked Sydney to get the win at home this week and in an exciting game with two of the two top teams in my opinion if was a fun watch.

1st Quarter

Tim Soares opens the scoring with a 3 pointer to get the game started.

For Brisbane they go early to an Aron Baynes post up with a missed shot inside, but its great to see them go for a Baynes post play early in the game. Sobey made a midrange fade away J to open Brisbanes scoring but Sydney make another 3 from Derrick walton Jnr and they are off to a good shooting start.

Baynes imposes his size inside as he blocks a pass from Cooks to then drop the nice up and under layup on the other side to tie the score.

The big Banger then shows what he can do from outside as he drops the 3 ball and he is everywhere for Brisbane as they take the lead 8-11 at the 6:45 mark.

Walton Jnr dropped a nice bank shot, to take the lead back but Nathan Sobey brings it back for Brisbane with a 3 and Sydney call a time out 12-14.

Tyler Johnson decides to impose his will on the game and finally makes an impact with a floater inside to take the lead back 14-16, as had been a bit of a non factor for Brisbane so far.

Johnson then keeps driving to the bucket and makes 3 buckets in a row as he looks to get going offensively, but Kuot Noi drops a 3 and stops the run 16-20 with 3min left in the quarter.

Xavier Cooks made a couple of strong drives and looks to get aggressive before a 3 ball from DJ Vasiljevic closes the quarter with Sydney taking the lead 24-23.

2nd Quarter

Sydney made a steal and Derrick Walton jnr drops a nice high layup off the glass in transition to open the scoring for Sydney in the quarter, 26-23

An Aron Baynes Mid range bank shot J ,opens scoring for the Bullets to keep it close.

Baynes was playing some good d inside and pulling down rebounds imposing his size in the paint!
Nathan Sobey made an inside bucket to get the lead back 30-31 with 5:45 in 2nd, 30-31 but hunter quickly takes it back off a dime from Walton Jnr.

Brisbane have a few defensive breakdowns and missed shots as Sydney start to pull away and with 3:15 left in the quarter. Cooks really does have all the tools to be a great player in the league or the NBA.

Harry Froling dribbles the whole court and lays it in off a great screen inside by Baynes to stop the run with two min left in the half. Tyler Johnson then goes down hard hitting this head off some shoulder contact and has a split and bleeding mouth, but no foul call as the refs are letting them play. Then Baynes drops a 3 to bring the lead back down to 42-36, here comes Brisbane!
A Cooks drive closes the half to hold a good lead for Sydney 46-39.

3rd Quarter

Xavier Cooks foul shots open the scoring for Sydney going 1/2 with a banked free throw! off a hard foul from Baynes
Tanner Krebs made a 3 to open scoring for Brisbane off an Aron Baynes post up, with the ball finding the open shooter 47-42.

Suarez blows back to back plays for Sydney and they miss the opportunity to really push the lead, with an air ball and then off an insane Simons pass he missed the catch and Brisbane catch a break.

But Simon then got a steal and big dunk and Brisbane call a Timout, as the wheels were starting to fall off down 56-45.
Jason Cadee makes his first bucket of the season off a great cut in the out of bounds play out of the timeout, and Can he get going!? Brisbane need a hot shooting Caddee and Sobey to really unlock their potential.

Sydney’s guards are so impressive! They get people great shots as Kuot Noi drops a 3 off a great drive from Walton Jnr and its 12 point lead 59-47

But a fouled three point attempt on Jason Caddee and tech on the Sydney Coach for being too animated on the call gets 4 free throws for Cadee. Just what Brisbane need to get Caddee going!.

Sydney’s coach Chase Buford continues to ague on the sideline after getting the tech.

Chase Buford released a statement recently regarding his animated coaching style and passion for the game and his team, which was great to see and very important discussion point for mental health in sports, but has it put a target on his back? The tech was for being too animated and walking away, not for saying anything! And also his reactions became a talking point for the commentators. The media release was great for society but might be hard for himself.

Sydney's intensity on D is upped and Brisbane can't even get the ball up the court with multiple turnovers.

Brisbane have Froling and Baynes on the court and they still aren't looking to push the ball inside the paint!? But a Caddee 3 saves them and then he drops a shot inside to get them back to only a 5 point deficit with 1:30 left in the quarter.

Sydney keep missing foul shots and Jason Cadee is doing everything! Making plays and dropping shots. Those four free throws really got him going! Caddee makes a great play to find an open Baynes who drops the bomb and the Bullets are only down 3, until Nathan Sobey closes the quarter with another 3 ball off a Devondrick Walker assist coming off a Baynes screen tie-ing it up going into the final break.

Great game so far, with physical play, techs and come backs!

4th Quarter

Xavier Cooks drives to the basket and lays it in with a soft finger roll to open the quarter and taking back the lead 69-67.

Cooks follows it up with a big block on Baynes and then drops a tasty dish to a wide open Hunter as Cooks is taking over! He trash talks Baynes after who throws out an air ball 3!
Cooks then shows his touch with a soft floater over Baynes, as he has his own 7-0 run and pushes the lead for Sydney 74-67.

Sobey finally gets Brisbane going, with a layup off a nice Baynes screen inside the paint.
Brisbane decide to bench Baynes and go small to stop cooks! 8min left in 4th qaurter. But cooks needs a breather and asks to be checked out just before he drives to the cup and drops the lay in!

Cooks is even better then I realised as he often has a shooting drought but his ability to get to the basket and soft touch is amazing. But he will need to be able to hit shots to take his game to the nba level.

DJ Mitchell drops a 3 and Brisbane are still in it down only 3 point game 76-73. 6:30 left in the game.
Cooks comes off for a rest and its Walton Jnr's turn to take over for Sydney as he made it a 5 point lead with a nice drive to the cup.
But Dj Mitchell finds form dropping another outside shot to keep it close.
Walton Jnr can do everything as drops a bomb 3 with a hand in the face! 85-81 with only 4:00 left and Brisbane go back to Baynes on the court. But Walton Jnr picks him up off a screen and absolutely cooks him! Driving to the basket and pushing the lead further. Walton puts it all on display hitting shots and finding open team mates to push the Sydney lead out to 10.

Justin Simon grabs the offensive board and attacks Baynes under the hoop with a tough wrap around, up an under the hoop shot, making the basket and getting the and one, as Sydney were rolling and have so many weapons

With 2:00 left in the game and Sydney up 96-81 its over, as Brisbane empties the bench. He had a donut in game one and this was important to have a run of shots dropping. If they can get Sobey 100% healthy and his shot dropping the bullets should be good! Could be slow start for the Bullets though.
Tyler Johnson is not a star player who will carry a team. He’s an all around solid guard at the NBA level, but not a star as that’s never been he’s role. And the the young players were those I was excited to see take their shot at a bigger role on their team, or even how they played. Dyson Daniels missed nearly all of the summer league after being drafted by the New Orleans Pelicans and Jock Landale was traded to the Phoenix suns. Josh Giddey has started hot but lets break down some of the action.

Jock Landale - Phoenix suns

The phoenix suns were blown away by the hot shooting Adelaide 36ers which you can read about in my game review. But they suited up against the Los Angeles Lakers today and Jock Landale played a bigger role this time out. The whole bench unit played better this game, and the ball moved through hands a lot better with Cameron Payne not in the lineup. The Suns walked away with the win after trailing for the majority of the game.

Jock Landale had some great plays through the game but really came to the show in the last quarter, dropping two 3's and grabbing some offensive boards.

He finished with 14 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal and 1 block in 23 minutes.

Good all round game from Jock. Hopefully we will get to see him get real minutes with the Suns when they start the regular season.

Torrey Craig also played but only for 15 minutes and pulled down 7 rebounds with 6 points.

Dyson Daniels - New Orleans Pelicans

Dyson Daniels suited up for the first time in an NBA preseason for the New Orleans Pelicans against the Chicago Bulls, and he just looks so comfortable as an NBA player. He is tall (grew two more inches last year), athletic and looks strong for his age. When he moves on defense he seems to be everywhere, stopping his player, but also being great as the help defender getting some big Blocks against the Chicago Bulls.

Late in the game Dyson had a few big plays getting steals, dropping a 3 ball and securing the game at the foul line to push the lead out to 4 points, dropping both foul shots with 11 seconds left in the game, and the Pelicans walked away with a win against the Bulls.

Daniels made some strong drives to the bucket through the game, but looked to struggle with finishing his shot close to the rim. With some more experience under him and if he increases his shooting percentage at the rim, and three point line he will be absolutely deadly. An all around solid player who can play lock down D, make the right pass and get to the rim whenever he wants. The only thing missing is the experience and finishing which will come in time. A great pickup for New Orleans in the draft! He could see some good minutes in the season with his strong defense that the Pelicans really needed last season.

Look at these plays to close out the game. That's a winner! I'm very excited to see the player he develops into, throughout the season and beyond.

Daniels finished with 15 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 Blocks.

Josh Giddey - Oklahoma City Thunder played against Josh Green Dallas Mavericks

Josh Giddey looks to have bulked up in the offseason and is looking strong to start the new NBA season. His floater and shot are both looking better and in his first two preseason games, is putting up some good numbers.

In his first game that was not televised against Denver Giddey put up: 14 points, 12 rebounds and 9 assists.

In his second game against the Dallas Mavericks where he only played 17 minutes, mostly in the first half, he had 13 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. Shooting 60% from the field.

Giddey was throwing some insane passes to find open team mates as usual, but some tough shooting kept his assist numbers lower in this game.

Josh Green had some great plays and looked aggressive from the tip. He looks to enjoy playing against Giddey. Green made a couple of great plays and is just a solid piece to have on your team. He doesn't try to do too much, but can do a little of everything, and with the speed and size he still looks to have a lot potential in his game.

They might have a bit of a rivalry building after Green beat Giddey out of the last spot on the Boomers squad before the last Olympics. Thunder Vs Mavericks games will definitely be good entertainment for the aussies watching.

Josh Green in 22 minutes finished with 9 points, 4 assists and 2 steals

<iframe allow="accelerometer; No one could hit a shot at the Blitz and if that was due to the rims, the heat or the giant fans in the arena in Darwin I don't know, but players who looked average there are looking like stars on their home courts. I think you can throw an analysis made at the blitz out the window going into the season.

Illawarra Hawks vs SE Melb Phoenix Thursday 6th Oct

The SE Melb phoenix had a great start getting a solid win over the 2nd place Tasmania Jackjumpers in round one, off the back of some phenomenal basketball from Kyle Adnam who dropped a 30 piece in the opening game!

I can not see Adnam following up that performance against the Illawarra Hawks, who suffered a tough loss to the Sydney Kings in Round 1. Mitch Creek played his all round solid game but never looked to take over as he often does. I think he is still not 100% healthy but still a good player. The Hawks looked to struggle to get their offence going at times against the Kings but I think they will turn that around and watch out for Tyler Harvey to have a big game after a quieter round 1. I am excited to see if Kyle Adnam can back up his shooting from game 1, hopefully his shoulder didn't carry any injury through to this week.

I've got Hawks by 6.

New Zealand Breakers vs Tasmania Jackjumpers Friday 7th Oct

New Zealand went down to Melbourne United by 4 points in round 1 but are looking pretty strong despite that. While the Jackjumpers suffered back to back losses in Round 1 to the SE Melb Phoenix and the Cairns Taipans. I think New Zealand should get the win in their home court but Tasmania will want to at least see it competitive after the big loss to Cairns. (22 points)

New Zealand 8 points

Sydney Kings vs Brisbane Bullets Friday 7th Oct

Sydney had a good win against the Illawarra Hawks with their new imports really stepping up to make some statement plays. I think this will be a good close game and tough to pick. Watch out for Xavier Cooks to start to find his feet and attack more often. He Started to look comfortable getting to the basket with ease late in the game in round 1. Brisbane need to find Baynes more often inside to utilise him more on offence and he needs to stay out of foul trouble for Brisbane to pull off a win. Cooks may attack him early to create that foul trouble for Baynes which will spell trouble for Brisbane. With Sobey still no where near 100% I don't think Brisbane have the fire power to keep up with Sydney.

Sydney by 5.

SE Melbourne Phoenix vs Cairns Taipans Saturday 8th Oct

Cairns Taipans had a big win over the Tasmania Jackjumpers who had a very competitive match against the Phoenix. I wasn't impressed with Cairns after the Blitz but I think round 1 has shown shooting was not realistic at the Blitz and Cairns could surprise people with the amount of shooting they have.

Along with the Phoenix playing two games this round and Creek still not 100% I've got Cairns to take the home win.

Cairns by 11

Perth Wildcats Vs Illawarra Hawks Sat 8th Oct

Second game in two days for the hawks against a well rested and at Home Perth wildcats team is a tough ask for the Hawks. Bryce Cotton looked his MVP best in game 1. I cant see them dropping this one. It really is amazing how consistent Cotton has been over his NBL career. As well scouted and known he is in the league and is still unstoppable!

Perth by 12

JackJumpers vs Brisbane Bullets Sunday 9th Oct

Both teams are on their second game of the round and both will be looking for what may be their first win. Brisbane have the roster to and the power forwards to really push Tasmania inside. Hopefully Baynes will have a big game and can carry Brisbane to a win.

Brisbane by 8

Melbourne United vs Sydney Kings Sunday 9th Oct

This is a marque match up for the weekend with two teams coming off of strong wins in the first round. Very tough to call with both teams looking like they have found some very talented imports to combine with their MVP calibre local talent. If Xavier cooks can shut down Raion Tucker and someone can slow down Chris Goulding I think Sydney should win. But with both teams being able to shoot the lights out I think whoever plays better defense will win it. Should be a barn burner of a match!

Sydney by 2

Cairns Taipans vs Perth Wildcats Monday 10th Oct

Cairns are team that will probably win or lose big. They have selected a hot shooting team where is the shots aren’t dropping it will be a long night. Perth are well rounded and may have some troubles getting buckets if Bryce Cotton isn’t carrying the team. I should probably pic Perth for the safe bet but I’ll go Cairns to shoot the lights and get the win.

Cairns by 4

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4302997934515328021.post-6402200985598114682022-10-03T23:41:00.006-07:002022-10-05T01:41:46.366-07:00NBA Preseason Game: Phoenix Suns vs Adelaide 36ers
NBA Preseason Game: Phoenix Suns vs Adelaide 36ers

Game Review:

With round 1 of NBL23 starting this weekend it was an NBA preseason game most people were really looking forward to seeing, and it did not disappoint!

1st quarter:

Deyondre Ayton wins the tip for the suns and he looks so big out there, which leads to Devin Booker opening the scoring with a nice drive to the basket for the Phoenix Suns.

Adelaide blow an alley oop play, and Ayton dominates inside for an easy layup.

Early on it looked like its was going to be a long night for Adelaide.

Daniel Johnson (DJ) got scoring going for the 36ers with a corner J and then followed it up with a 3 ball to take a quick lead change 5-4.

After watching the NBL this weekend, the NBA court looks so Big! There is just so much space between the players. It can't be understated how much it changes the game.

Antonius Cleveland drops another three and the 36ers have come to play 8-4. But Booker breaks the drought and swings the lead back to the Suns. It happens so quick. 8-9, 9:00 left in the quarter.

A DJ Three and the lead is back to the 36ers its a fast paced 1st quarter and DJ is on fire 3/3.

The starters for the Suns just look unstoppable, but Adelaide manage to stay right there with them. The Chris Paul and Deandre Ayton pick and roll looks unstoppable, and with the Suns leading they take the starters out for a rest at the midway point of the 1st quarter.

Adelaide make some nice plays, and Craig Randall II opens his scoring with a nice drive. He is instant offence for the Suns whenever they need a bucket. Not many centres can compete with a player of his size and skill, as the Suns start to push back. Big run by the Suns starters.

CP3 drops a nice pocket pass to Ayton to push the Suns offence but couple of bomb 3's from Franks and Randall from way outside keep Adelaide moving. 78-70.

The suns starters are just too good and shrink the 36ers lead to one point 82-81, with 5:00 left in the quarter.

Mitch McCarron makes an insane no look pass to Sotto for the easy dunk and the Suns bring their starters off with 4:00 left in the 3rd Quarter down 84-81.

Jock Landale makes a nice spin and layup for the Suns but with the Suns bench unit on, Craig Randall II is making plays and dropping bombs. 89-83 3:00 left in qtr.

Cameron Payne made some good shots but cant find an inside pass! Jock Landale has been open under the basket multiple times and Payne can not make the pass.

Kai Sotto gets in on the 3 points shooting, but Torrey Craig got a put back lay in off a Payne drive, and miss for the Suns, closing the quarter. Adelaide holding the lead 96-90.

4th Quarter:

Randall Drops a bomb from way outside 3 points range to open scoring for the 36ers, and then turns around to drop two more! Randall is 8/15 from 3. He follows it up with a floater and he has taken over the game. 36ers blowing the lead back out to 10, 107-97.

Antonius Cleveland makes a big block at the 9:02 mark and Torrey Craig gets fouled going up for transition dunk. 36ers aren't giving up anything easy. They want the win, they can feel the win!

Franks finds a nice layup, and dropped another big 3 nearing the half way point in the quarter 116-109.

Torrey Craig played some good defence getting a steal and dunk.

Cameron Payne keeps the suns offence going but the Suns bench unit can't move the ball. Payne can not pass!

Randall blocks Payne playing both sides of the ball, and the 36ers continue to shoot the lights out.

Franks drops a way outside the 3 line bomb, and its 132-119 with 1:30 left in the game.

Landale and Craig keep the Suns score ticking with some strong offensive rebounds and put backs off Payne misses, as he drives to the basket on every play.

With 30 seconds left in the game and the 36ers up thirteen, 134-121 they empty their bench to cruise to the win!

Adelaide 36ers win 134-124.

Adelaide 36ers shot the lights out going 24-43 from long range! 55.4% from the field and 55.8% from 3!

Mitch McCarron was dropping dimes everywhere with 16 assists.

I can not see Adelaide shooting this well again, but it certainly showed how big of a jump the NBL has made in the last few years.

This is the first ever win by an NBL club against an NBA squad! And 22 minutes from the starters was no bench squad.

For the Suns, the starters looked good and really were unstoppable when they were in. As a preseason game they were never going to go 100%. The bench needs to be looked at though. Cameron Payne can not be your bench point guard. He can score, but cannot unlock that bench unit. The point guard needs to be able to facilitate and put the ball where it needs to be, to get the most out of the team. Payne can put the ball through the basket but can't find a teammate wide open under the basket. They will have some work to do.

Hopefully Adelaide get to keep some of their players going into the NBL season, but I can see several NBA teams snapping up these NBL players after that display. Most NBL players have an NBA outclause in their contract so that roster may look very different come game one of the NBL season for Adelaide.

Key players:

Adelaide 36ers:

Mitch McCarron: 16 Assists, 9 Rebounds

Craig Randall II: 35 points,

Robert Franks: 32 points, 7 rebounds

Daniel Johnson: 15 points, 4 rebounds

Phoenix Suns:

Chris Paul: 6 points, 12 assists

Devin Booker: 13 points, 4 assists

Deandre Ayton: 22 points, 6 rebounds

Cameron Payne: 23 points, 4 assists

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4302997934515328021.post-49571713507458657392022-10-03T17:23:00.001-07:002022-10-03T17:23:08.092-07:00Round one game 1 Tasmania JackJumpers VS South East Melbourne Phoenix
Round one game 1

Tasmania JackJumpers VS South East Melbourne Phoenix

I had originally called this game as an easy win for Tasmania but who could have predicted this:

Kyle Adnam came out to make a statement, hitting the opening shot of the game and he was on fire when he walked on the court.

He dominated the first quarter to create a strong lead for the Phoenix which looked like the Jackjumpers could not get close. You've got your Bryce Cotton, Tyler Harvey, Chris Goulding, Rayjon Tucker. Players you know will drop big points night in and night out.

But here are some tips for players on the cheap (>$1M) that I think may have a big upside to build on the bench.

1. Isaac Humphries C Melbourne United $687K

If Isaac Humphries is not on your roster go get him now! Ice was putting up good numbers at the blitz and looked energised on both sides of the ball. He was blocking shots, picking up boards and making buckets. He looked good off the bench, and with Ariel Huckporti going down with that Archilles injury, which was a huge loss for the team and the league, Ice's fantasy stock shot through the roof. His role on the team will be a lot bigger, and if he can find that form he had alongside Josh Giddey where he was playing MVP calibre ball, he could be a steal at $687K

2. Harry Froling SF Brisbane $475K

Harry Froling played some starter minutes alongside Aron Baynes in the NBL Blitz and looks to be in some great form. Apparently they plan to run the two power towers of Baynes and Frolling together at different times this season, and even as a bench player I think he will be a big part of the scoring load for Brisbane this season. At $475K a steal!

3. Tanner Krebs SG/SF Brisbane $360K

Tanner Krebs looks to have come into the Season off some impressive form and confidence from his NBL1 season. In the last Brisbane NBL Blitz game he had an immediate impact as a starter and carried Brisbanes offence in the first quarter. He could be a surprise breakout player this season and im excited to have him as part of my fantasy squad.

4. Cory Webster SG Perth $500K

From the games I saw of Perths preseason, a lot of their offence looks to run through Bryce Cotton as it should being the best player in the league, but if opposing defences manage to lock Cotton down, where is the scoring coming from? Luke Travers is not a scorer. He is a defensive menace and a play maker. Cory Webster has to have an impact off the bench. They need the scoring and I can see them running him with Bryce Cotton at times to have more shooting. Pretty solid at $500K

5. Bul Kuol Cairns SG $723K

Bul Kuol in the Blitz was everywhere. He pushed that Cairns team in ways no other player was able. He got to the basket and made big shots. His price tag is on the upper for this bargain basement list, but he has a huge upside and could be a key player for Cairns this season.

6. Rayan Rupert SF New Zealand $850K

Rayan Rupert is a star in the making. When you watch him play, you can see the player he can become with some experience under him. His playmaking and skill at getting to the bucket is elite. He may need to increase the speed of his shot but at this stage of his career, making it consistent is more important. If NZ give him the keys to run, and the confidence to be creative with the ball he could put up some insane numbers.

7. Reuben Terangi S.E. Melbourne SF $472K

Terangi needs a big season. This could be his last shot to stand up as the player he has the potential to be. The Phoenix will need his scoring punch off the bench and at $472K he could be solid piece, at least until we see how far he wants to push his game.

8. Jared Weeks Tasmania PG $343K

Jared Weeks has always been a streaky shooter and with his low price tag, he can be an end of the bench player who ticks up the scoreboard on any given night. Ive seen him drop back to back 3's in multiple quarters, and I've got him on the end of my bench. Tasmania distribute the ball so well that any player could drop a big number on any given night.

9. Jared Bairstow PF Tasmania $292

Jared Bairstow is a great cheap pick up. He pulls down plenty of boards and gets some buckets off offensive rebounds. At $292 a steal.

10. Gojak Gak C Brisbane $500K

Gorjak Gak is an unknown that has the tools to be very good! He could be a come from nowhere break out player this season. He is so tall and so quick. He really rounds out Brisbanes roster with the other two centres on the team being so bulky, Gak allows Brisbane to stay tall when other teams go small.

11. Tom Vodanovich PF New Zealand $343K

Vodanovich looks like he has great touch around the basket, and can step out to the three point line. With Tom Abercrombie out of the roster for the foreseeable period after that freak eye injury, Vodanovich could be a good player to fill that gap for NZ and a good pick up for $343K

12. Jack Mcveigh SF/PF Tasmania $882K

Jack McVeigh broke out last season. He is a constant threat on offence. He just knows how to get buckets and im surprised he is so cheap! He will continue to get buckets this season and should be a good pick, but I feel like after last seasons finals, people know who he is, so he is not as high on the list as he should be.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4302997934515328021.post-70353839122882420692022-09-29T03:47:00.006-07:002022-09-29T03:47:29.302-07:00NBL 2022-2023 Round one predictions
Round one Match ups

The NBL season tips off this Saturday 1st of October and for the punters out there the early rounds are the best time to get in some good wins with the betting agencies, usually a few steps behind in the NBL.

Game 1

South East Melbourne Phoenix (home) vs Tasmania JackJumpers (Away) 1/10/22 at 6:00pm AEST

The betting agencies have S.E. Melbourne as the favorites here but this should be an easy early win for Tasmania. Phoenix will have to have some players back from injury if they are to get a win here but as far as I know; Mitch creek still injured/limited minutes, Ryan Broekhoff still out injured and Gary Brown out injured, Trey Kell out injured. Gary Brown was the one bright spot for Phoenix in the NBL blitz and even with him they were looking like the cellar dwellers of the season. Phoenix do have Mitch Creek and Zhou Qi returning which is a huge part of their offense, but after watching them in the Blitz Creek would have to carry them to get a win here.
Tasmania looked surprisingly solid in the Blitz. I was expecting a pretty big slump from them after their stellar run to the finals last season but they still look strong managing to maintain the core group and this should be a good win to start their season. Watch out for Milton Doyle to have a big game posting a good points total. Over all it will probably be a low scoring game but Tassie should walk away with the W and for the punters out there a good bet on the underdog here.

I predict Tasmania to win by 10.

Game 2

Illawarra Hawks (Home) vs Sydney Kings (Away) Saturday Oct 1 8:00pm AEST

This should be a tight game. The Kings are the favorites on the betting sites but again i think ill have to tip the underdog.

The Hawks just look very well rounded in the Blitz and Sydney may have some teething issues to start the season with the all new import line ups. Xavier Cooks is coming off a huge NZNBL season but his shot was not looking great at the Blitz and looked a little passive. Perth really looked lack luster against Melbourne in the Blitz and showed the league how to slow them down. Contain Bryce Cotton and slow the Wildcats. From the Blitz it didn't look like Perth had enough to shooters to take focus away from Cotton.

Brisbane during the Blitz, moved the ball well and got open shots for so many players. If they manage to play with that style and maybe get Aron Baynes a few more post touches watch out the rest of the league. Tyler Johnson seemed to always be able to get a bucket or get to the free throw line when the offense stalled. Even with Nathan Sobey still on limited minutes from injury i think Brisbane are looking strong.

Melbourne United vs Perth Wildcats Game review

Melbourne started their preseason with some very
unimpressive play. Brisbane handled them easily, with solid ball movement
and a consistent play style. This game against Perth was a big indicator about
where they were going to stand on the leader board this season.

Perth have been playing well with Cotton back to his best, dropping 36 points in 31 minutes in the Wildcats 1st Preseason Blitz
game. Can they continue that unbeaten streak.

1st Quarter:

Ariel Huckporti opened the game with an attempt at a monster
jam which rimmed out. He had been missing a few shot so far in the preseason
and that attempt looked like he wanted destroy the ring!

Xavier Rathan-Mayes (XRM) opened scoring for the game with a strong drive,
one on one against Luke Travers who is normally a very strong defender. Off
ball Travers is elite defensively, maybe on ball is a hole in his defensive
game.

Travers makes up for it though with a steal in the next play
and opens scoring for Perth with a drive to the rim. Travers has a similar defensive play style to Mattise Thybulle in that
he uses his basketball IQ and physical gifts to be an elite off the ball
defender, he manages to help on nearly every other defensive play.

Huckporti skies for a big block then runs the lane for a big
jam on offence. He certainly made up for the miss on the opening play!

Travers made a great cut and received the feed for a jam for Perth and it looks
like Travers is playing point guard again!

XRM played exceptional defence on Bryce cotton and
made him a complete non factor the whole half, let alone the first quarter with Cotton
barely getting a touch of the ball.

Makuach Maluach made a strong drive one
on one against Travers again, and Melbourne have a good lead 16-8 with 3 minutes
left in the quarter.

Cory Webster is in and immediately made a classic Webster play with a
crossover, step back and mid range J for Perth. But Isaac Humphries comes in for Hukporti
and there is no loss in the center position as he brings down the offensive board
and makes the bucket. A strong Humphries would be huge for this Melbourne team.
He was playing MVP level basketball before his injury with the Adelaide 36ers
alongside Josh Giddey.

Melbourne show off their improved ball movement and drop a 3
bomb at the buzzer to take a 10 point lead after the first 10 minutes 21-11.

2nd quarter

Perth make a better start in the second with a great cut by Luke Travers for the easy dunk.

Chris Goulding drops a bomb 3 for Melbourne though and extends the lead.

Ariel Hukporti is everywhere as he blocks a Bryce Cotton drive which leads to a David Barlow dunk in transition. Isn't Barlow retired?! Must be nice for Melbourne to have a on court assistant coach.

Rayjon Tucker gets in on the action with a 3 bomb and the Melbourne lead keeps getting bigger as United are rolling. 29-13 with 7:30 left in the 2nd quarter.

Perth get a bucket off a great cut from TeShawn Thomas off an excellent Travers pass as he is still playing point guard and carrying Perth in many ways. Travers seems to have a hand in every play that goes anywhere on both sides of the ball. But Melbourne shut him down with a big block and the Melbourne block count just keeps going!

Issac Humphries is pushing when he gets on the floor and makes a nice drive and layup off a XRM assist. He must be a big fantasy pick up for cheap. Very high upside. (Both players)

Melbourne cant do anything wrong. Playing excellent defence and moving the ball. Then XRM and Isaac Humphries team up for a block and steal to push the ball and complete a full court transition play with two passes and the ball not touching the ground, finishing with a Tucker and one layup!

Rajon Tucker is an exciting player who's enthusiasm for the game is infectious. When he makes a good play you'll know about it with his celebrations and his plays are awesome!

XRM continued to dominate dropping step back mid range J's over Bryce Cotton like its a pick up game.

Perth were struggling to get anything and everything was going Melbourne's way until Brady Manek drops a 3 at the buzzer.

Melbourne with a dominating lead 48-30 at the half.

3rd Quarter:

Rajon Tucker opens the quarter with a huge right hand dunk.

Tucker backs up the dunk with a steel off a the quick hands of Hukporti and leads the fast break to feed Hukporti for the Jam!

Todd Blanchfield got scoring started for Perth with a big 3.

Bryce Cotton backde it up with a 3, for his first points of the game with six minutes left in the third quarter. Melbourne absolutely shutting him down!

Some hard defense from Melbourne and Cotton and Travers are down after some hard hits, but in the back court Ariel Hukporti is down and not getting up off, a non contact play! He is carried off the floor by his teammates and he couldn't put any weight down on his foot!

The story of the game isn't Melbourne's excellent play but the Hukporti injury! Its later confirmed its a torn archiles and he is out for the entire season! Its a huge loss for Melbourne United and the entire league. Hukporti was ready for a break out season before possibly going to the the NBA and off his play from this game he was looking like a dominating big man in the NBL. I really hope he recovers well and can continue his career without lasting injury.

Cotton droped another 3 and it was looking like Perth might make a run, but Tucker got a steal on the next play and an easy transition lay up.

XRM then just catches fire, smoking cotton and dropping a bomb three as cotton looks on. While on the other end absolutely shutting Cotton down.

XRM then feeds Humphries for a couple of layups and makes more buckets before asking for a rest. He absolutely took over the game with Melbourne up 26.

Tucker dropped a 3 at the buzzer and Melbourne go into the final break dominating 73-47.

4th Quarter

Perth open the quarter with a Thomas 3 ball and back it up with a Cotton steal, and another Thomas 3 but its 73-51.

Melbourne forced a turnover and find Brad Newley for an easy layup and it stops Perth's run in its tracks.

The final quarter didn't need to be played as Melbourne continued their great play and run away with the win 90-63.

Final score Melbourne 90 Perth 63.

Its preseason but it was a statement win by Melbourne, who if they can play like that, will be very tough to beat.

Losing Hukporti can not be understated though. His defence and offence in this game was exceptional.

Game Leaders:

Melbourne United

Xavier Rathan-Mayes (XRM) - 22 points 2 assists

Rajon Tucker - 18 points 7 rebounds 3 assists

Isaac humphries - 12 points, 7 rebounds 3 assists

Perth Wildcats:

Tashawn Thomas - 10 Points

Bryce Cotton - 8 Points, 7 rebounds

Cory Webster - 10 points

Luke travers - 7 points, 4 assists, 3 steals, 2 rebounds

@font-face

They look to be a well balanced team but possibly not as deep as some of the other top teams in the league.

This is my first look at Cairns this preseason. I hope they have put a strong team together, as it would be great to see Cairns near the top of the ladder again. Keanu Pinder was out for the game so it was unfortunate not to get to watch him battle against Aron Baynes, as he had a great run with the Australian national squad and I believe he will make a big jump this season.

1st Qtr

The cairns taipans get scoring started with a tip in from Tahjere McCall.

Brisbane quickly returned the favour with a huge screen by Aron Baynes opening Tyler Johnson for a wide open mid range jump shot.

Devondrick walker got lost on defence and DJ Hogg drops his second 3 ball early, which earned an early time out for Brisbane, who were quickly down 10-4 with 7:37 left in the first.

The time out didn't help though, as DJ Hogg came out and dropped another triple which was followed by back to back steals by Cairns, and another 3 ball from Hogg who was on fire! 4 from 4 from long range. Prior to the Blitz Brisbane dominated Melbourne United with consistent ball movement and a flowing offence. Bringing in the stars could have been a struggle to continue with that style. Sobey was also back but was on a large minutes restriction along with Aron Baynes.

New Zealand were without their starting point guard William McDowell White, so they would definitely be at a disadvantage and hard to get a true read on them as a team. Rayan Rupert will always be worth the entry ticket though. I'm sure we will be watching him in the NBA next year, so enjoy it while you can.

1st Qtr:

Akoldah Gak got the scoring started with a tip in rebound and Brisbane were on the board early.

Aron Baynes quickly pulled down his first rebound and he is looking strong to start the season. As athletic as ever judging from this early look.

The Breakers opened their scoring account with a Barry Brown drive and got fouled by Gak completing the 3 point play.

Early on you can see Baynes absolutely shutting down the paint on defence. The breakers don't want a look in. He is a big body and takes up so much of the area inside. He got an early bucket off an under the basket drop shot and finished the and 1. He looks happy to be playing professionally again!

Tyler Johnson and Baynes both missed a couple of open corner 3's but as we have seen a lot of people are struggling on these "Tight" rims. Maybe Baynes can loosen them up with some big dunks through the tournament.

Already you could see Brisbane are trying to keep the flowing offence in this new look team as Devondrick Walker dishes to Baynes, then to Gak for an easy floater and it all looks too easy for Brisbane.

I really like Devondrick walker on this Brisbane roster. It has been said that he may be a temporary feature for the team, and will face plenty of scrutiny playing beside players like Sobey, Johnson and Baynes, but I feel like he fits in well with the ball movement offence that the Bullets are implementing and that can be hard to find in an import willing to play in a system like that. It is refreshing to watch after the Patterson black hole in previous season where the ball may go through the basket eventually but it stopped moving as well.

Tom Vadonovich got New Zealand going with a couple of bomb 3's getting the lead for the Breakers. 13-14 with 4:11 left in the quarter.

New Zealands french phenom Rayan Rupert makes his presence and skill known in the first quarter with a steal off Sobey and Dunk for New Zealand extending the lead 13-19.

Sobey then made a couple of strong drives but certainly still looks to be nursing that injury. New Zealand hit a couple of 3's and blow the lead out to 10, 16-26 with 40 seconds left in the 1st.

Harry Froling got to the line to keep the bullets in it, but some smooth moves from Rupert leads to a Rob Lowe dunk to close out the quarter. 18-28. Rupert has a very smooth skillset for an 18yr old.

2nd Qtr:

Jason Cadee got a nice layup from some good ball movement to open the quarter. While on the other end Rob Lowe has a huge tip jam to get the scoring going for the Breakers.

Baynes got a nice mini hook to get his scoring going in the quarter and then got another inside bucket after a missed 3 attempt. I was not sure about Tasmania's roster or Sydney's but picked Sydney expecting Xavier Cooks to have a big start to the season. Cory Homicide Williams has picked Xavier Cooks as this league season MVP and after dominating the NZNBL I to am expecting a lot from him.

1st Qtr:

Milton Doyle got the game started for Tasmania with a nice floater inside the key.

Sydney had a tough start with a turnover and a couple of missed free throws from Rashad Kelly. DJ Vasilivic got Sydney going with a tough awkward looking floater but got Sydney started.

Sydneys import point guard Derrick Walton Jnr showed off his handles early and can certainly handle the rock, he should be an exciting player to watch,

Jordan Hunter started the game with a couple of nice blocks but gets some tough calls and is called for the fouls. Rashad Tucker goes 1/3 from the stripe.

Josh Magette hits a big 3 but sometimes takes some unadvised shots and certainly likes to show he has unlimited range, in his opinion at least.

Both teams are missing a lot of shots and apparently these rims are quite tight and not forgiving at all. 5:00 left in the first and its Tasmania 5-6 Sydney.

Doyle has to be one of the smoothest players in the league and effortlessly gets to his mid range jumper favourite spot. It will be interesting to see if it will be as easy once the scouting report is out.

Kouat Noi is looking excited for the season and is everywhere to start the game. He made a nice two and pulled down a couple of quick rebounds pushing the ball but may be overexcited giving up the offensive foul. He really needs a a healthy season getting injured in each of his last 4 season. He certainly had a bounce in his step in this game.

Its brick city in the first quarter and very low scoring Tasmania 12 - 13 Sydney

2nd Qtr:

Xavier Cooks starts the quarter with a good block on the defensive end but Jared Baristow gets the scoring started for Tasmania with a nice mid range J.

Dj Vasilivic gets the scoring started for Sydney with a bomb 3.

Derrick walton Jnr was wheeling and dealing in the quarter hitting buckets and finding open teammates if only his Sydney teammates could catch the ball.

Jared Weeks hits back to back 3s for Tasmania and finally some shots are falling.

Shots dry up for the Jackjumpers but Sydney keep turning the ball over and Tassie get some buckets to keep it tight and the lead 25-23.

Justin Simon was showing off his defensive skill getting steals and keeping taste's offence running. He won defensive player of the league last time he played in the NBL and followed that with Defensive player of the league in Germany. He should really help Sydney's title hopes teaming up with Xavier Cooks to shut down opposing teams.

Cooks threw some nice cross court passes and was very unselfish but almost to a fault. If he pushes it and looks to score he can be a bigger presence on the offensive end and will likely open driving lanes for others.

Still a tight game at the half Sydney up 34-35.

3rd Qtr:

Tasmania open the half with a quick bucket and Josh Magette 3 quickly extends the lead 39-35.

Justin Simon get a steal and dunk to open the scoring for Sydney and shows off exactly what he is known for, turning defence in offence.

Milton Doyle's smooth moves get him to his spot time and time again and is finding teammates open from his aggressive play.

Xavier Cooks shot is not looking great air balling multiple 3 point shots while on the other side Jack McVeigh is dropping bombs from behind the 3 point line holding Tasmania lead 45-40 at the 5:00 min mark in the third.

Cooks missed a monster dunk to close the quarter Tasmania holding the lead 48-46.

4th qtr:

Development and injury replacement player McDonnell opens the quarter with 3 51-46 while on the other side Sydney are building a house with all the bricks their shooting. Jared weeks hits a 4 blowing the lead open 54-46 and Sydney call a time out. Sydney get nothing from the time out and continue to struggle to score only getting on the scoreboard from a couple of Xavier Cooks free throw.

Tasmania start to blow the lead out with a huge 3 from Milton Doyle which he follows with and and 1 drive 62-47 4:46 left in the game and Sydney still were without a field goal in the quarter. Milton Doyle get a left layup and he has taken over the game while sydney can not hit the broad side of barn.

Kouat Noi gets sydney their first field goal of the quarter with 4:22 left in the game! and down 14, 64-50.

The Jackjumpers get a 3 off some nice ball movement then get a steal, they were flowing and the game is over, they blow Sydney out of the water.

Final Score Tasmania 73 - 53 Sydney

Highlights: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1zkMtQR_4A

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4302997934515328021.post-23093903217179961942022-09-16T21:24:00.001-07:002022-09-16T21:24:12.081-07:00NBL Blitz Day 2 Games
NBL Blitz 2022 Day 2

Game 1: 5:30pm Sydney Kings Vs Tasmania JackJumpers

Ive gotta tip Sydney to get the win here. Its the grand final rematch but with Tasmania losing some players and Sydney as well I gotta go with the team with better individual players. The kings always have a strong roster and with Xavier Cooks still on the team his offensive and defensive prowess will power the kings to many wins through the season and i believe this will be the first.

Tasmania are a team that will grow with time and teamwork needs time to strengthen. No scoreboard or time was on the creek until half time which made it a tough game to follow. Made even more difficult was the lack of updated from the commentary team who knew their was no scoreboard for the viewers. Very frustrating.

Kyle Adnam started the scoring for Phoenix with a quick layup and followed it by feeding Grant Anticevich for a 3 ball.

On the other side Adelaide got the scoring started with some foul shots by Mitch Mccarron.

Adelaide's imports got things started early with a steal from Robert Franks who pushed it up the court on the fast break to dish it to Craig Randall for the dunk.

Adelaide look to have made some strong moves in the off season and now have a pretty stacked team.who also look quite good on defence with Mitch Mccacon and Antonius Cleveland shutting opposing back courts down.

Craig Randall also has a some smooth moves and completes a ridiculous up and under layup late in the first. which was closely followed from a drive on the previous play.

On the others side Melbourne look to struggle to put the ball in the whole at times. Missing 3 absolute bunnies at the basket. They sill manage to hold on and keep it close in the first quarter. Dane Pinot looks very tall out on the court and hopefully he can stay healthy and really see what he can bring to a team.

Kai Sotto had a tough start to the preseason with a couple of tough plays and closed the quarter with a turnover in his first post play of the game. He turns it around later but it was a hard start.

1st quarter closed closer then I thought Adelaide 21 - 20 Phoenix.

2nd Qtr:

Mitch McCarron opens the quarter for Adelaide with a bomb 3 then followed it with a classy no look dish.

Gary Brown had a smooth move with the ball taking Daniel Johnson off the dribble and cooking him for a long 2.

A lot of the Phoenix buckets were from individual play then good team basketball but missing three key pieces would be why they still don't look to flow well.

The half closes Adelaide 39-33 Phoenix with still no scoreboard and is nearly unwatchable not really being able to follow the game without the score or time. I stopped watching but predicted Adelaide to blow out Phoenix in the third quarter which is was what occurred. going into the fourth with a nearly 20 point lead.

Adelaide go onto win the game 76 - 84.

Phoenix at this stage still don't look like a team and are mostly playing pick up basketball. Missing key pieces and needing to increase intensity on defence. Kyle Adnam has been carrying the team well but he doesn't look like enough of an offensive threat or team building leader to be the primary point guard in my opinion. I'm not sure how their final roster is to look but he may really be a better bench point guard.

On the other side Mitch Mccarron looks like he is keystone piece for this Adelaide team. With all the offensive weapons on the team it will take a true point guard leader like Mccarron to find his teammates and get everyone involved for them to go the distance in the season ahead.

Kai Sotto had some big play later in the game and if he gets the opportunity could be a big peice for Adelaide. His length and athleticism is elite and if he tighten up a few other areas of his game and defence his ceiling is very high!.
Franks, Cleveland and Randall look to be a very impressive import roster for Adelaide and complement each other well.

Adelaide should be a lock for the post season from this early look.

Full Highlights

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xK9sWNPnfrQ

Boscore:

https://nbl.com.au/games/2120048

ADELAIDE 36ERS 84 (Randall 16, McCarron 12, Cleveland 12)

They developed a good combination through the game.

Josh Magette Looked like he was running the Phoenix team well early with this great pass:

Josh Magette Highlight assist

The first quarter had some flowing offence but both teams definitely looked like they needed some work together to mesh better:

Jack Jumpers going into the first break up 24-18

A worrying sign already as Ryan Broekhoff left the game with a slight limp and did not return another big hole to fill in the offence for Phoenix.

2nd Qtr:

Phoenix open scoring with a bucket from Trey Kell III with a strong one on one post play but unfortunately missed the and 1 foul shot.

Jack jumpers start slow and Phoenix manage to get a nice drop off pass to a cutting player for the layup and cut the lead to 2: 24-22.

Its a rough start to the quarter as both teams look to be building houses with all the brick they were throwing early.

Breaking the drought, Doyle and Krslovic continue their strong play with this great highlight dunk from the no look Doyle pass:

Phoenix move the ball well but look to missing an offensive powerhouse who will make a play and create some action through attacking the rim. Australia had a rough start and looked like they were slow to get there offense going until Nick Kay delivered a smooth move inside for a layup, reminding us just how good and versatile a player he is. Kay followed this up with a rebound on the defensive end and an offensive rebound and tip in on the other. He is just somehow everywhere in this game.

Luke Travers checked in early in the 1st and found a quick steal which was closely followed by a block on defense and an open 3 by the Boomers and we looked to start rolling. Luke Travers somehow had his hands on everything on defense and you can see why the Cavaliers took a punt with him in the Draft.

For Iran Jamshidi looked to keep them in the game and tried to control the offense for Iran.

DJ managed to get a bucket to close out the 1st quarter.

2nd Quarter:

Opening the second Quarter DJ had another turnover and it looked like it was going to be a long night for him.

For Iran Sajjad Mashayakhi had one of the smoothest moves of the game to shake his defender on the inside for an easy layup. Standing 5'11" its not easy to find yourself that open in the paint but his move had his defender flailing backward.

Jamshidi continued to carry the majority of the load on offence for Iran but Australia really started to crank up its Defence. Between Mitch Norton and Mitch McCaron hounding Jamshidi on defence it was going to be a tough night.

With the Boomers defence starting to crank a few notches Nick Kay took over the game in the second quarter hitting back to back 3's and seeming to find every rebound and throwing a touch down pass to a leaking Sam Froling. Australia blew the lead out to 18 points with 6 minutes left in the second quarter but Kay soon took a seat for rest.

Iran pushed back and managed to bring the deficit back to 11 to close out the half.

3rd Quarter

After half time it was expected Australia would come out pushing hard to get that big lead back but Iran came out firing and looked like they couldn't miss. They had a fire in them that Australia looked like it couldn't match after the long flight home. Iran went on a 14-0 run to take the lead 43-44 with 6:30 left in the qtr. It started looking shaky for Australia but after a couple of Mitch Norton foul shots, and a Nick Kay and DJ pick and roll it calmed the squad. They took a time out and the Boomers came out hungry to shut down Iran with some intense defence.

Then DJ came out firing, hitting back to back triples from a couple of huge defensive plays and assists from Luke Travers.

Travers and DJ took over the game in the third quarter. With DJ on offense and Travers on defense it was a two person Boomers outfit for while. Travers was everywhere on defence and had his hands on the ball constantly. He'd block a layup, then close out the 3 attempt in the same play. Travers scored his first bucket with 1:30 left in the third but his fingerprints where all over the game making huge defensive plays every other time down the floor.

It was a whirlwind quarter with Australia opening it up 11 to then be down 2 to close it out up 7, 65-58.

4th quarter:

DJ opened the fourth continuing his form from the third and greatly improved from the first half with a smooth layup on the inside, which was followed by a Norton steal and 2 more points from DJ, and followed by a bomb 3 as he took over the game!

Boomers open the 4th with a 9-0 run and it seemed like nothing could stop DJ as he drops another bomb 3 and a layup. While on defence the Boomers put the clamps on Iran who could not make a bucket.

With 6:00 left in the 4th Australia had blown the lead out to 18 points, 80-62.

DJ Vasiljevic leaves the game at the 5:00 mark in the 4th with 23 points, 5 boards and 2 assists. He opened the half with 2 points!

At this point the game is blown open and Australia gets their young players some court time. The 18 yr olds Alex Toohey and Rory Hawke both made some nice plays and managed to show what an upcoming talent they both are and should be on everyone's radar in the future as Australia Cruise to a 30 point victory 98-68.

I didn't know how the Boomers would bounce back after the long flight and things certainly looked a little shaky in the third, but with the depth of talent the boomers now have they controlled the game well. Iran definitely could have gotten closer if a few more shots had dropped but when the ball stops dropping its hard to stay with a team as talented as the Boomers.

It was a fun game and great to see so many young Australian players getting the opportunity to show their talent at the international level.

Notable Boomers:

Nick Kay: 20 points, 7 rebounds (3 offensive)

Dj Vasiljeic: 23 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists,

Luke travers: 6 Blocks, 6 points, 2 steals, 4 assists

Notable Iran players:

Mohammad Jamshidi: 17 Points,

Sajjad Mashayekhi: 11 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists

Salar Monji: 10 points, 6 rebounds 3 assists

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
